Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
