The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of AI Tools for Next Divinity Game

The developer behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its next major project, creating immense hype within the player base. However, subsequent comments from the company's figurehead have brought clarity to the conversation, addressing the team's approach toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new message, Swen Vincke detailed that the company is employing AI technology for certain ancillary functions. These encompass fleshing out PowerPoint slides, producing early-stage artistic references, and drafting temporary dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke emphasized that the final assets in the game will be crafted exclusively by actual artists. "We are creating everything ourselves," he stated.

We are constantly increasing our pool of storytellers and are actively forming dedicated writer rooms.

Since this area is being particularly mentioned — we presently have 23 artistic staff and have job openings for further creatives.

All our efforts we do is supplementary and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on actual creation.

Any ML tool implemented properly is a boost to a artist's routine, never a stand-in for their talent.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The admission of employing this technology originally provoked backlash among portions of the fanbase. In response, Vincke provided more detail on social media.

"Our team utilizes these tools to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and reference books," he wrote. "During the initial planning process we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then swap out with hand-crafted concept art."

He noted, "We've hired talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to execute what a AI generates."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had previously detailed the company's targeted method to AI and ML, categorizing its use into key areas:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes polishing mocap data, audio processing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create rough versions of gameplay ideas to test concepts ahead of complete implementation.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could one day create innovative reactivity, specifically in simulating player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.

He specifically stated that core creative disciplines — such as visual art — are are in no way fields where the company is reducing artistic involvement. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these very positions.

"Our studio is not launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not planning on cutting teams to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
